London seeks to ban “Fail”
While looking around on Yahoo! News this article stood out to me, mainly because I find that its stupidity is shocking.
London Seeks to abolish the word ‘Fail’
Wed Jul 20, 9:02 AM ETLONDON (Reuters) – The word “fail” should be banned from use in British classrooms and replaced with the phrase “deferred success” to avoid demoralizing pupils, a group of teachers has proposed.
Members of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) argue that telling pupils they have failed can put them off learning for life.
A spokesman for the group said it wanted to avoid labeling children. “We recognize that children do not necessarily achieve success first time,” he said.
“But I recognize that we can’t just strike a word from the dictionary,” he said.
The PAT said it would debate the proposal at a conference next week.
Okay, so i put this one up because since i’m from georgia, and there are so many idiotic proposals for schools here, i like being able to post about someone else being stupid.
Rather then saying “Oh, it’s because of the language we are using that is causing kids not to learn, so therefore it must be changed!” They should try saying something like “Well maybe it’s the way we are teaching children that is causing Deferred Success, and maybe we should change something about it.”
I’m not entirely sure of how things are done in the UK, but if it’s much like how it’s done here, then i can tell you this: the system of teaching we are using is around 100+ years old. It is time for change, and people need to know!
